-Griet's sister, Agnes, dies of a plague, thus forcing depression on her and her family.
 
-Frans, Griets younger brother, was sent away at thirteen to become an apprentice. He had an affair with the owner's wife which was the cause of his leave.
 
-Cornelia, the second daughter of Catharina and Vermeer, takes it to herself to ruin Griet's life. It is Cornelia who breaks the tile, symbolizing Griet's separation with family.
 
-At the end of the story, Griet is caught by Catharina in the art studio with Vermeer. It is revealed that there is a relationship between Vermeer and Griet. Catharina throws a fit over the fact that a poor girl wore her earrings. As Griet leaves the house of Vermeer, Catharina goes in labor, giving birth to a child that would die later die.
 
-After getting kicked out of maid hood, Griet runs and marries Pieter the Son. With him, she bears two kids whom she names Frans and Jan.
 
-Ten years after Griet leaves the house, in Vermeer's will, he orders the pearl earrings to be given to Griet. Griet in turn sells them for twenty guilders to a tradesman in order to pay off the debt Vermeer owed the now butcher's wife.
